Congressman Mike Ezell, who represents Mississippi’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, issued a statement following his vote to end the recent government shutdown. The shutdown lasted nearly 43 days and was described by Ezell as being led by Senate Democrats.
“After more than 40 days of unnecessary pain and uncertainty, Senate Democrats have finally agreed to reopen the government — something Republicans, President Trump, and millions of hardworking Americans have been demanding for weeks. I was happy to vote to reopen the government after the Democrats’ deranged shutdown that hurt Mississippi families, businesses, and federal workers lasted nearly 43 days,” Ezell said.
Ezell outlined several impacts on Mississippi during the shutdown period. He noted that the state’s economy lost an estimated $82 million each week, almost 26,000 federal workers missed paychecks, and over 357,000 residents—including about 139,000 children—experienced disruptions to SNAP benefits.
He also commented on earlier legislative efforts: “Republicans passed a clean funding bill back in September to keep the government open and give time for responsible, bipartisan budget negotiations. Yet, Democrats chose politics over people — and nothing has changed because of their obstruction except the damage they caused.”
Ezell concluded with a call for regular order in congressional proceedings: “Now that this Democrat-led shutdown is finally over, it’s time to return to regular order, finish our appropriations bills, and restore stability for American families. That’s what House Republicans have been fighting for from the start.”
Mike Ezell has served as representative for Mississippi’s 4th District since 2023. He succeeded Steven Palazzo in this role. Born in Pascagoula in 1959 and currently residing there at age 64, Ezell earned his BA from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1997.
