George County Sheriff’s Office – Memorial Day Is a Time for Remembrance, and for Honoring the Sacrifices Made by Our Military in Defense of Our Nation

It has been a federal holiday since 1971, but Memorial Day’s history stretches back to the Civil War when it was known as Decoration Day. May 30 was designated “for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” Memorial Day is a time for remembrance, and for honoring the sacrifices made by our military in defense of our nation.

As you enjoy an extra day off of work or grilling out with the family, or even if you have to work today, as our officers and dispatchers do, we ask that you take a moment and remember the lives lost, and the families of the fallen, whose sacrifices keep us free.

Sheriff Keith Havard and the George County Sheriff’s Office wish you a safe and peaceful Memorial Day.
