The Mississippi congressional delegation called on President Trump on May 20 to approve a major disaster declaration for the state following destructive tornadoes and severe weather that struck on May 6-7.

The request follows significant damage in Lamar, Lincoln, Franklin, Lawrence, and Wilkinson counties. Approval of the declaration would provide federal resources to help recovery efforts after an EF3 tornado destroyed homes, businesses, and infrastructure across the region.

In a letter sent by U.S. Senators Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith along with Representatives Bennie Thompson, Trent Kelly, Michael Guest, and Mike Ezell, the lawmakers said: “Several of the tornadoes caused catastrophic damage, including an EF3 tornado that, at times, exceeded a mile in width and remained on the ground for nearly 70 miles. The storms destroyed and severely damaged many homes and businesses, uprooted trees, crippled critical infrastructure, and caused widespread power outages affecting thousands of Mississippians. Communities across the impacted region continue to face significant recovery challenges in the aftermath of these storms.”

The letter also stated: “We respectfully write to urge your full and timely consideration of Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves’ request for a Major Disaster Declaration following recent devastating tornadoes and severe weather in our state. We remain deeply grateful for the continued partnership and support provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in response to prior disasters.” The lawmakers emphasized that federal assistance is needed because local resources are strained beyond capacity.

Wicker’s office assists Mississippians with casework involving federal agencies such as veterans affairs or Social Security according to the official website. Wicker has served as student body president at University of Mississippi before starting his public service career as a page in Congress; he later represented Mississippi’s First Congressional District before joining the Senate according to the official website.

The delegation concluded their appeal by saying: “Thank you for your consideration of this request. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you need further assistance in this effort.”
