The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the nation’s older adult population is expanding while the number of children decreases. From 2020 to 2024, the population aged 65 and above rose by 13%, whereas the population under 18 declined by 1.7%. The older adult demographic has surged since 1920, increasing from 4.9 million to more than 61 million in 2024.

A study published in 2021 found that close to half of Americans in this age group—about 28 million people—could need long-term services and support. The report also projected that above one-third may ultimately require nursing facility care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an organization focused on insurance education. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
