U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, addressed the U.S. Senate on Mar. 9 regarding President Trump’s recent decision to conduct military operations against Iran.

Wicker said the president’s choice was made to protect American interests and security, emphasizing support for service members involved in the operation. The senator also discussed the broader implications of the conflict and responded to criticism from other lawmakers.

“This weekend, our commander-in-chief made the most difficult decision a president can make. He ordered young American service members into action,” Wicker said during his speech. He continued, “President Trump decided to attack Iran. That decision was profound, deliberate, and correct.” Wicker also quoted President Trump: “We pray for every service member as they selflessly risk their lives to ensure that Americans and our children will never be threatened by a nuclear armed Iran.”

Wicker outlined four goals for the military campaign: destroying Iran’s missile capabilities, eliminating its navy, ending support for terrorist activities in the region, and preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. He stated that progress had been made toward these objectives: “We have taken out their air defenses and missile systems ahead of schedule… Last week, Iran had 11 ships in the Gulf of Oman. Today, they have none.” He added that airstrikes would continue until objectives are achieved.

Reflecting on decades of conflict with Iran, Wicker said thousands of Americans and allies have died due to Iranian actions or those supported by Tehran. He described Iran as part of an “Axis of Aggressors” alongside China, Russia, and North Korea.

Wicker represents Mississippi according to his official website. He serves as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee according to his official website and sits on the Congressional Board of Visitors for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy according to his official website. Wicker co-founded the Senate Malaria and Neglected Tropical Disease Caucus according to his official website, has been honored by the National Association of Manufacturers for policy work according to his official website, and authored the SHIPS Act to advance U.S. naval capabilities according to his official website.

Concluding his remarks about ongoing operations in Iran, Wicker said: “It is… a weighty, deliberate, and correct decision made to protect the United States of America.”
