Representatives Mike Ezell and Troy Carter have introduced the Mississippi River Basin Fisheries Commission Act of 2025, known as H.R. 1514. The proposed legislation aims to establish the Mississippi River Basin Fishery Commission, which will focus on protecting and enhancing fisheries within this critical waterway.

Representative Ezell emphasized the importance of the Mississippi River Basin, describing it as "the backbone of our economy" and highlighting its role in providing jobs and serving as a sanctuary for wildlife. He stated that the commission would adopt a proactive approach to conservation, management, and sustainability.

House Natural Resources Chairman Westerman expressed support for the bill, noting that it would ensure cooperation between state and federal agencies. He praised Representatives Ezell and Carter for their leadership on this issue.

Representative Carter highlighted the significance of the basin to Louisiana's communities, fishermen, and environment. He stressed that addressing challenges such as invasive species and habitat degradation is essential for maintaining a healthy fishery.

Ashlee Smith from the Mississippi Wildlife Federation pointed out that this legislation results from decades of effort by fisheries management professionals. She mentioned that states will now have resources to combat invasive species degrading the watershed.

Ben Batten from Arkansas Game and Fish Commission noted that states have struggled with managing large river species across various jurisdictions. He believes this legislation provides necessary resources for effective management.

Glenn Hughes from the American Sportfishing Association thanked Representatives Ezell and Carter for their leadership in introducing this act, which he believes will enhance fishing opportunities for millions of anglers.

Jerry Brown from MDWFP emphasized the commission's role in protecting fishery resources and supporting sustainable fishing opportunities across local communities.

Marc Smith from the National Wildlife Federation applauded Representatives Ezell and Carter for their efforts to protect these world-class fisheries while supporting economic growth in the region.

The proposed commission will operate as a federally funded entity focused on habitat restoration, fishery research, invasive species mitigation, coordinated fishery management among local agencies, promoting sustainable practices within commercial industries along with recreational sectors—all aimed at preserving ecological integrity alongside economic viability throughout one-third America's
