This week in Mississippi Gulf history.

Lem Barney born in Gulfport on September 8, 1945

Lem Barney was born on September 8, 1945, in Gulfport, Mississippi. He attended 33rd Avenue High School, where he played quarterback. He later played college football at Jackson State University. Barney was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1967. That year, he was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. He played 11 seasons with the Lions as a cornerback, return specialist, and punter. He recorded 56 interceptions and seven touchdowns. Barney played in seven Pro Bowls and earned All-NFL honors twice. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992. He is also in several other halls of fame, including the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. He appeared in movies and sang on a Marvin Gaye record. Barney has worked in broadcasting and public affairs. He has also spoken out about football and health risks. He remains one of Gulfport’s most accomplished athletes.
