(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – On May 31, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson released the following statement:
“After reviewing the text of the Bipartisan Debt Ceiling Agreement, I am convinced that it is in the best interest of the American people. I've seen the devastation caused by shutdowns and know we can't afford another one. The alternative to not support it will be detrimental to the 2nd Congressional District of Mississippi and the American people.

This Bipartisan Agreement protects our veterans' health care, critical services for children and families, as well as Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. I'm glad President Biden and Speaker McCarthy set aside their partisan differences and worked together for the betterment of our country. They both deserve to be congratulated."

Democrats will always work to protect everyday Americans. The Bipartisan Debt Ceiling Agreement:

• prevents a devastating default on our debt
• protects historic infrastructure and climate investments
• protects veteran’s health care
• protects the 40 million borrowers in President Biden’s student debt relief plan
